The primary purpose of this analysis report is to create a comprehensive and more qualified knowledge base regarding cruise tourism on Bornholm. This is the first time so much knowledge on the subject has been gathered in one document, which is why a key objective of the report is to serve as a reference work that can support development and related decision-making. For this reason, the report is relevant to all stakeholders working with or affected by cruise development.

A particular focus of the work has been to generate new insights into the opportunities and challenges associated with improving the guest experience, especially in existing host towns—primarily Rønne and Gudhjem—but also across the island more broadly, including Nexø, which has previously hosted cruise tourism and has ambitions to do so again. This objective is specifically highlighted by Port of Rønne and Destination Bornholm, who, as driving forces on Bornholm, are particularly interested in receiving input on how the guest experience can be enhanced while ensuring it is done sustainably and with respect for the island's many local communities and residents.

The project's purpose is therefore broken down into the following two sub-objectives:

  • Consolidation of existing knowledge about cruise tourism on Bornholm, with a focus on clarifying the current situation and development of cruise tourism on the island.
  • Investigation of opportunities to improve the guest experience, both in the parts of the island that are currently, or could become, destinations for cruise tourism, and on the island more generally.

The future publication will be in Danish
