The Island of Craftsmanship: Integrating Business and Place-Based Development
The report examines the Maker’s Island initiative onthe Danish baltic island of Bornholm as a case illustrating how businessdevelopment and place-based development can be integrated within a ruralcontext. The initiative has contributed to sustained growth in employment andincome generation within the craft sector on the island. Furthermore, it hasserved to highlight the broader significance of craftsmanship, including itsrole in supporting and enhancing tourism development. Makers and their craftsmanshiphas thereby become an important element of the island’s place identity,branding, and overall attractiveness. In turn, this has contributed to thecreation of employment opportunities and economic value within the tourismsector.
